Posted on August 1, 2024October 10, 2025 by Brigit Chennells

Hermit crabs make fascinating and unique pets, offering endless opportunities for creative enclosure setups. Providing a stimulating environment with custom hideaways and climbing structures is essential for their health and happiness. Here are some simple and straightforward DIY projects to create the perfect habitat for your hermit crabs.

1. Custom Hideaways
Hermit crabs love having places to hide and explore. Creating custom hideaways can be both fun and easy.

Coconut Shell Hideaway
Materials Needed:
-A coconut shell
-A saw
-Sandpaper

Instructions:

1. Cut the Coconut: Carefully cut the coconut in half using a saw. Ensure the cut edges are smooth to avoid harming your hermit crabs.
2. Clean and Sand: Remove the coconut meat and sand the edges to make them smooth.
3. Create an Entrance: Cut a small entrance hole in one half of the coconut shell.
4. Place in Enclosure: Position the coconut shell in your hermit crab’s habitat, partially burying it in the substrate for stability.

Terracotta Pot Hideaway
Materials Needed:
-Small terracotta pot
-Sandpaper

Instructions:

Smooth the Edges: Use sandpaper to smooth the edges of the terracotta pot to prevent injuries.
Position the Pot: Place the pot on its side in the enclosure, creating a cozy cave. Partially bury the pot in the substrate to secure it.

2. Climbing Structures
Hermit crabs are natural climbers and enjoy having structures to climb and explore.

Driftwood Climber
Materials Needed:

-Driftwood pieces (make sure they are clean and free of salt or chemicals)

Instructions:

1. Choose the Right Driftwood: Select driftwood pieces that are sturdy and have interesting shapes for climbing.
2. Clean the Driftwood: Boil the driftwood in water to remove any impurities and then let it dry completely.
3. Arrange in the Enclosure: Secure the driftwood pieces in the habitat, ensuring they are stable and won’t topple over when your crabs climb on them.

Rope Ladder
Materials Needed:

-Natural fiber rope (such as sisal or hemp)
-Scissors
-Non-toxic glue

Instructions:

1. Cut the Rope: Cut the rope into several equal lengths, depending on the size of your enclosure.
2. Tie Knots: Tie knots at regular intervals along the length of the rope to create steps for climbing.
3. Secure the Ends: Use non-toxic glue to secure the knots if necessary.
4. Attach in Enclosure: Securely attach the rope ladder to the top of the enclosure, allowing it to hang down for your hermit crabs to climb.

3. Shell Pools
Hermit crabs need access to both fresh and saltwater. Creating shell pools can add both functionality and aesthetic appeal to your enclosure.

Materials Needed:

-Large seashells or small shallow dishes
-Freshwater and saltwater

Instructions:

1. Clean the Shells: Ensure the seashells or dishes are clean and free of any sharp edges.
2. Fill with Water: Fill one shell with fresh water and another with saltwater (using a marine salt mix).
3. Place in Enclosure: Position the shells in the habitat where they are easily accessible for your hermit crabs.

Final Thoughts
Creating custom hideaways and climbing structures for your hermit crabs can be a fun and rewarding experience. By using natural materials and ensuring everything is safe and secure, you can provide a stimulating and enriching environment for your pets. Enjoy these DIY projects and watch your hermit crabs thrive in their personalized habitat.
